Senators from the Select Committee on Electric Vehicles toured the Nissan Casting Plant in Dandenong ahead of its third public hearing in Melbourne on August 31.
The plant manufactures key parts for the fully electric Nissan Leaf and Nissan hybrid EVs. Senators will also visit SEA Electric, which converts commercial vans, minibuses and trucks to battery electric drive trains at its workshop in Dandenong.
The committee is charged with reporting on the potential economic, environmental and social benefits of widespread EV uptake in Australia, and measures to attract EV manufacturing, supply and value chain activities to Australia.
“It’s great to see that Australia is already benefitting from the electric vehicle revolution,” committee chairman Tim Storer says. “Now the task is to see how we can position ourselves to take full advantage of this transformation going forward. The opportunity for Australia is huge, but we must act quickly.”
SEA Electric managing director Tony Fairweather says there’s no reason why every new residential and commercial pick-up or delivery vehicle operating around our cities should not be 100% electric going forward.
“The life cycle savings of going electric are such that the additional up-front capital investment is easily recouped within four years,” he says.
“Going electric is now a better procurement decision for operators of these vehicles.”
