About 75% of Australian electric vehicles run on renewable energy and around half charge up using rooftop solar.
So says Perth-based professional services company Future Smart Strategies managing director and EV advocate professor Ray Wills who lectures on climate and environmental change at the University of Western Australia.
About 400 Australian EV drivers responded to the Twitter poll where Wills asked where their EV charging power came from.
Most say their EVs are charged at home and more than half of that through rooftop solar power, about 16% using a green power option, 25% a standard grid mix which may include renewable energy and 11% through destination charging.

Wills is not surprised by his survey’s result, which is supported by an Electric Vehicle Council Australia report last year where more than half of the respondents said they would use renewable energy resources if they wanted to charge an EV.
Wills’ Twitter thread includes much more about EVs, including his belief that Australian motorists are starved for EV options and that their makers tend to release them first in places with appropriate incentives. He also says a lack of support by the Australian federal government around EVs is detrimental to Australian consumers.
Wills features in a recent podcast about the expected impact on energy demand of Australia’s move from a “dumb” power grid.
