Neuron e-scooter Brisbane extension approved

Neuron’s e-scooter service has been renewed for a further 12 months by the Brisbane City Council.

The company has optimised safety and operations by developing and implementing a range of innovative features while working closely with the council.

It’s been using N3 e-scooters since August 2019, which have been upgraded and include an app-controlled helmet lock.

“In many ways Brisbane has set the standard for cities around the world when it comes to micro mobility and they have continued to encourage us to innovate, particularly when it comes to safety,” Neuron Mobility chief executive Zachary Wang says.

“Brisbane was the first city to maximise geofencing, allowing control of where and how fast users can ride. They also asked us to solve the long-running issue of helmet availability for riders. This led to us developing the world’s first app-controlled Helmet Lock which means every Neuron e-scooter now has a helmet.”

It secures a safety helmet to the e-scooter, electronically releasing it to use at the start of the trip. This innovative safety feature was designed to make more helmets available to riders, and since its introduction helmet use has increased to more than 85%, Neuron says.

“When e-scooters first arrived in Brisbane there was a lot of excitement and now they are maturing as an important transport option with operators continually upgrading their offering,” Brisbane public and active transport chair Ryan Murphy says.

The company adapted its operations during the COVID-19 crisis to provide essential workers with transport during the lockdown period, introducing measures such as extra sanitisation.

Neuron has also been offering free monthly passes to the indispensable public health workers in Brisbane, with e-scooters positioned in locations that improve transport options for medical professionals.

Recent research revealed that 87% of users believe the e-scooters have created a positive impact for the city.

More than 60% of all rides start or finish within 100 metres of a train station or bus stop, with 67% of riders using the e-scooter for their daily commute. The data also shows that 22% of all Neuron trips replace those that would otherwise be taken in a car.

Neuron operates 600 e-scooters in Brisbane and maintains a fleet of more than 3000 e-scooters in the Asia Pacific region.

The company has enabled more than 200,000 users in Australia to cover well over a million kilometres of city travel.
