EVs and bushfires

Tesla Model 3 owner Rob Lang tweeted pre and post bushfire images of his car on the same bush track to illustrate his point that zero emission EVs can benefit the planet.

The bushfire crisis in Australia has been attributed to increasing impacts from climate change, and prompted comment from around the world on the Australian federal government’s policies – or lack of them.

Lang says in his tweet that Australia’s “coal-loving” prime minister Scott Morrison made a pre-election comment that EVs would “end the weekend”. Morrison’s comment came during his attack on Labor leader Bill Shorten’s EV policy. Lang says he took the pre bushfire photo of his Tesla to show it “ruining” his weekend in November 2019.

He returned to the same spot after fires had swept through the area, adding that since then Australia has burned and “we must stop CO2 release”.

Australia still lags most developed countries in electric transport but is gaining ground with the introduction of new EVs like the Tesla Model 3, the Model Y also due out soon.

Meanwhile, Model 3 owner Garry Thorpe has recounted his bushfire experience on Facebook, saying his Tesla came through well in aiding his family and others.

“Tesla was brilliant,” he says. “In a disaster, both power and petrol are rapidly unavailable. When power is restored, fuel is hard to come by.

“My experience was that I could get a ‘full tank’ before the crisis arrived, and as soon as the power was back on, could get a ‘full tank’ easier than petrol. The car AC (used to block smoke) was brilliant, you can run it for hours with hardly any power drain.”
