Kona Electric earns five-star rating, first EV crash-tested

The Kona Electric is the first electric vehicle (EV) to be crash tested in Australia.

The frontal offset crash test was done Australasia’s independent vehicle safety authority ANCAP as an audit test of the Kona model line-up and achieved a five-star safety rating.

ANCAP uses a safety rating system of zero to five stars to compare the safety of vehicles and has become a key factor in vehicle selection.

It scored 14.97 out of 16.00, slightly better than the 14.07 by the petrol engine variant.

The test saw 40% of the front driver’s side of the vehicle make contact with a crushable aluminium barrier at 64km/h.

“Kona Electric’s pioneering position as the first ever EV crash tested in Australia, and its continuing ANCAP maximum five-star safety rating, further underscores Hyundai’s eco vehicle leadership,” Hyundai Motor Company Australia chief executive JW Lee says.

Kona’s overall score of 35.07 out of 37.00 includes its frontal offset test result, side impact and pole crash tests, and inclusion of seat belt reminders.
