A disqualified New South Wales driver has been charged with a number of offences after using an electric mobility scooter to tow a five-metre boat on a busy road.
The 35-year-old now faces charges of driving while disqualified, using an unregistered vehicle on the road, using an uninsured vehicle on the road, and using an unregistered trailer on the road.
He is due to appear in court in January.
Police say the man towed the boat along the Pacific Highway through Belmont, south of Newcastle, on October 19.
The man reportedly told media at the time he wanted to go fishing.
The incident was filmed by a member of the public and went viral on social media.
A Facebook post describes it as “Only in Belmont will you see a man towing a boat with a mobility scooter with a durrie in one hand”.
A senate inquiry report this year suggested Austroads works towards a nationally consistent regulatory framework for motorised mobility devices like mobility scooters.
