Shepparton turns over to Leafs

Two Nissan Leaf EVs are already helping the Greater Shepparton City Council in Victoria reduce its greenhouse gas emissions.

The EVs arrived in October and are on the road in December after branding was completed.

Charging stations are at the council’s Welsford Street offices and Doyles Road Complex.

The council has been installing solar PV on key buildings in the municipality in an attempt to reduce electricity usage and greenhouse gas emissions, and is now turning its attention to the car fleet, a significant carbon emitter.

The EVs, which can be powered 100% by renewable energy, are a step in the right direction for the council, its sustainable development director Geraldine Christou says.

“Having these vehicles in our fleet will reduce our emissions, promote the benefit of energy efficient technologies that are driven by renewable energy and showcase that electric vehicles are feasible in a regional area,” she says.

“All the feedback we have received from drivers of electric vehicles tells us they are easy to drive, quick off the mark and most importantly, healthier for the environment. Keep an eye out for our vehicles around town.”

The council is in the state-wide ‘Charging the Regions’ project aimed at helping local governments across Victoria to understand their role in providing or facilitating public EV charging infrastructure.
