A $38 million energy storage system using Tesla big batteries is expected to be added to Infigen Energy’s Lake Bonney wind farm in South Australia.
Building of the 25MW/52MWh storage system is likely to start in weeks, the company says.
First stage completion is scheduled for March 2019 and second stage construction is planned to be completed in May that year.
The South Australian Government is providing $5 million from its renewable technology fund and ARENA is also providing $5m towards the Infigen project.
The Tesla Powerpack battery energy storage system (BESS) will be next to the 278.5mW wind farm and connected to the National Electricity Market (NEM) via the Mayurra substation owned by ElectraNet.
Lake Bonney is the third South Australian wind farm to get a Tesla big battery, and more are likely in Australia with a Victorian solar farm and wind project both in line.
The first Tesla big battery project was at South Australia’s Hornsdale wind farm, still the largest of its kind world-wide at 100mW/129mWh.
Electranet is installing a 30mW/8mWh battery at the Wattle Point wind farm on the Yorke Peninsula, and Nexif Energy is adding 10mW of battery storage to the new Lincoln Gap wind farm in Port Augusta, RenewEconomy reports.
Tilt Renewables is building a 21mW/26mWh battery storage facility along with a 44mW solar PV plant near the Snowtown wind farm.
In Victoria, installation of a 25mW/50mWh battery system is underway at the 60mW Gannawarra Solar Farm.
Work started about three months ago on the Bulgana Green Power Hub in Stawell with Tesla Powerpacks and Neoen’s Bulgana wind farm to deliver power to Nectar Farms’ huge greenhouse.
