The Lotus Evija hypercar’s “target” output of 1470kW will make it the most powerful production car the world has ever known – and it’s electric.
The $3 million machine was launched overnight in the UK also with the title of the first all-electric British hypercar and the first fully electrified Lotus powertrain in the company’s 67-year history.
At 1680kg the Evija is insanely light thinks to a carbon-fibre chassis which houses a 70kWh battery pack developed with Williams Advanced Engineering and is capable of charging at 800kW where the fastest current DC chargers are capable of just 350kWh.
With electric motors at each wheel packing 500Nm each, to total an output of 2000Nm of torque, the Evija is claimed to have a 0-100km/h sprint time of just three seconds, 0.1 of a second ‘slower’ than a two-tonne Tesla Model X P1000D.
It’ll also be capable of a 0-300km/h time sub-9.0 seconds and will max out at a top speed in excess of 320km/h with a claimed range of 400km. Not if aiming for that top speed, of course.
It’s understood three cars are destined for Australia.
Lotus Cars chief executive Phil Popham says the Evija will offer unprecedented performance.
“Evija will re-establish Lotus as a leader in terms of engineering and design; it is a hypercar that is built ‘For The Drivers’,” he says.
Design director Russell Carr says it’s the most ambitious project the brand has ever worked on.
“The Evija is beyond anything Lotus has ever done, beyond anything I’ve ever done,” he says.
“We have created something beautiful, something new, dramatic and unique,” he adds.
The Evija was revealed to over 350 international motoring media and executives in Hethel in London, with streaming attracting more than 500,000 YouTube views in 12 hours.
