ACT goes 100% renewable energy

The ACT is probably the first Australian state or territory apart from Tasmania to use 100% electricity from renewable sources, with supply from South Australia’s Hornsdale wind farm’s last stage now switched on and putting ACT over the 100% target.

As a result of sourcing mainly wind and some solar in other states, ACT’s greenhouse gas emissions have been cut by nearly 40% and closer to its aim of zero net emissions by 2045 while reaching its January 1, 2020 100% renewables goal early.

The ACT also intends electrifying its transport and buildings.

ACT energy minister Shane Rattenbury says on Facebook “the Hornsdale 3 wind farm in South Australia will be creating enough clean, green renewable electricity to power around 58,000 homes every year in Canberra over the next 20 years”.

He describes the milestone as a huge achievement in consolidating the ACT’s reputation as Australia’s renewable energy capital.
